Something that would be very interesting to look into, is whether or not the Romans knew that the other deities were related to their own when they tried to synchretize them. Roman attempts are quite famous, and may even come from Greek attempts (as they famously tried to link Hermes with Thoth), they probably also are part of the inspiration of the missionary method that was often used of linking existing religious practice to Christian faith. The evidence would suggest that the Romans did not, indeed, understand the real links between their own gods and those of the Germanics and Celtics, but their ability to draw correct conclusions from seemingly incorrect premises is still quite striking.
